Five Low Maintenance Plants for Your North Florida Landscape

Have you considered spring plant installation for your next landscaping project? Your plants don’t have to have a lot of time or energy on your part. Your spring landscape design can still be beautiful but low maintenance so that your lawn is a showstopper all season long!

When it comes to north Florida, we here in St. Augustine have a lot of plants that we can choose from. Below, we’ve listed our top five favorites that are sure to keep you happy and add to your curb appeal. They’re sure to wow anyone who passes through.

    Bush Daisies

Bush daisies are also known to attract butterflies and other pollinators. Select a full sun sight for planting in average, but well-drained soil. Water to establish these perennials, and then as needed. A two-to-three-inch mulch will help retain moisture and allow this drought-tolerant plant to thrive.

    Lantana

Each blossom head frequently showcases multiple hues, creating a kaleidoscope of color. Lantana flowers measure 1 to 2 inches across and are comprised of multiple smaller blooms arranged in a sphere. Blossom shades vary, from lavender, orange, red, rose, pink, gold and white.

    Crape Myrtle

In the spring, these plants are show-stoppers with their clusters of fluffy, pink flowers. They can also come in white, purple, or even have a reddish shade to them. Occasional fertilizer is necessary for flower vibrancy. But be careful because too much fertilizer can cause the leaves to overgrow.

These plants love the sun meaning they’ll thrive perfectly in your sunny St. Augustine home. Since we deal with a lot of rain too, make sure the soil can drain properly to prevent root rot.

    Arbicola

This flowering plant native to Hainan Province, China and Taiwan. Commonly known as a dwarf umbrella tree as it resembles a smaller version of the umbrella tree, Heptapleurum actinophyllum.

    Robellini Palm

Robellini palms are dwarf palm trees, and their small size makes them popular. They are slow-growing, versatile and they grow well individually or when planted in clusters. Robellini palms do best in warm, humid climates with moist, well-draining soil.

With the bright Florida sunshine and our beautiful coastline, plants have a different set of demands. If you plan to do your plant research, make sure to find plants that are heat-resistant as well as salt-tolerant. Nothing is worse than putting a bunch of money into plants that end up dying on you.

If you’re inspired, but feeling overwhelmed, we here at Yankee Clipper Lawn and Irrigation are ready to help you. We’ve been doing landscaping services since 1986 and we’re excited to help you with your landscape design consultation. Call us today at 904-461-5479 for your estimate for your next project.
